Packers Vs Lions: Have To Have It

This Sunday is being built up as the NFC North Championship game. The winner of Packers vs Lions will win the NFC North, and likely be the NFC’s #2 seed.

For the Packers, however, this game is the difference between having a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl, or just another short playoff run.

I understand in 2010 the Packers won 3 games on the road before getting to the Super Bowl, but the bottom line is this team is different. The quarterback, and the coach are the same, but the team is not. This team is great at home. Most good teams are. This year, however, the team has been on a completely different level at home.

The Packers average 41 points-per-game at Lambeau Field. That is a ridiculous number for obvious reasons. What is different, is on the road they average just over 21 points-per-game.

While they have played some great defenses on the road such as Seattle, Detroit, and Buffalo, they have struggled against some other teams as well. They scored 24 against Minnesota, and 20 against Tampa Bay to name a couple. This team is just different on the road.

That is what makes this Sunday’s game so important. With a win, the Packers may not need to go on the road at all as the NFC’s 2 seed. It’s unlikely a team wins in Seattle, but that has already happened this year. A Seattle loss, assuming they are the top seed in the NFC would make Lambeau Field the site of the NFC Championship game. A place where the Packers demolished nearly everyone in their path.

A place where they beat the New England Patriots, and frustrated Tom Brady. A place where they look like the best football team in the NFL.

If the Packers lose this game Sunday, they would plummet to the NFC’s 6-seed. In that scenario, no postseason game would be played at Lambeau Field. Their likely path to the Super Bowl would be at Dallas, At Seattle, and At Detroit. Two places they’ve already lost in relatively embarrassing fashion earlier this season.

Of course winning on the road is not impossible. As long as the Packers have Aaron Rodgers, they have a fighting chance in any game that they play, but in all likelihood if the Packers are going to play for the Super Bowl, at least one of those games has to be at Lambeau Field. The only way to do that, is to do something they have done every year since 1993.

Beat the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field.
